The retail and catering sector in China scooped a total 470 billion yuan ($74.4 billion) during the golden week of the 2012 Spring Festival, indicating a relatively stable consumption growth and consumer confidence, despite a slowing economy, an analyst said Sunday. ("Food and retail industries see golden week gains", from: Global Times | Ji Beibei 1/30/2012 )

Compared with 2011, the sales volume was a 16.2 percent year-on-year growth, the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM) said Saturday.

Chinese spent 404.5 billion yuan and 340 billion yuan in 2011 and 2010 over the same period, registering 19 and 17.2 percent year-on-year growth.

Though not as good as that of 2011 and 2010, the growth was not bad and "mirrored robust demand and big potential in daily consumption like food and clothing" and consumer sentiment over the economy of the year as a whole, Yan Qiang, an analyst of fast-moving consumer goods with consulting firm Adfaith, told the Global Times.

According to the MOFCOM, food, clothing and jewelry sold well during the past week. Expenditures on clothing and food rose by 18.7 and 16.2 percent respectively.

New Year's Eve dinner played a crucial role in the catering sector's growth, despite price hikes. Sales volume for dinner at Beijing's restaurants, for instance, registered a 20.4 percent year-on-year growth, according to Beijing Commercial Information Consultation Center.

Gold, silver and jewelry continued to be sought after items. Malls in big cities, like Beijing's Caibai and Shanghai's Tian Bao Long Feng Jewelry, recorded growth of more than 55 percent, the MOFOCM said.

Cultural, leisure and recreational sectors played a bigger role in consumption with museums, public libraries, book stores, cinemas and tourist spots frequented during the week-long holidays.

Since 2008, China has been working on how to stimulate domestic consumption to maintain its growth as foreign trade volume weighed down by global economic woes.

"The service industry, including the tourism and recreational sectors, is currently one of the few sectors whose potential remains to be tapped while that of the real estate and automobile sectors are almost fully exploited," said Wang Xianqing, an expert of circulation economics at the Guangdong University of Business Studies.

"But, without updated policies to help regulate and industrialize the industry, robust consumption is unlikely to last," Wang told the Global Times yesterday.
